膜式空氣彈簧的構(gòu)造是在金屬外筒與內(nèi)筒，或缸筒與活塞之間安放橡膠膜，通過膜的變型成功實現(xiàn)整體伸縮。在外筒的內(nèi)壁與內(nèi)筒的外壁上預(yù)先給出合適的傾斜或球面，據(jù)此橡膠膜伸縮時可沿該壁面發(fā)發(fā)生災(zāi)難形，受壓最簡單的面或物體表面的大小隨變型而變化。這就可以得到在定額高度下很軟，而在大位移時變硬的尤其的性質(zhì)，即合適的非線性彈性尤其的性質(zhì)。膜式空氣彈簧又分為約束膜式和自由膜式。
